Ben Thanh market is one of Ho Chi Minh's popular attractions. The market has existed since the French occupation. The original market was located by the Gia Dinh fortress at Ben Nghe river, where merchants and soldiers would land (ben means pier or port and thanh means fort). The market was moved to its present day location in 1912 and renovated in 1985. Built on a landfill of what was once a swamp, the "New Ben Thanh Market" is the largest market in Ho Chi Minh City.
